We as followers of Jesus Christ have the daily challenge to make decisions that will have a direct affect on the advancement of the Kingdom of God in our personal lives as well as those we are in contact with. The various and innumerable amount of desires we possess in our humanity contribute to the governing of decisions we have to make. Our will in making decisions is a key to governing our level of growth or maturity in relationship to God our Father and others.
Desire is defined as, a strong wish, longing, craving, sexual urge or appetite, formal request for action; to long or hope for. The Greek translation of the word, desires, in the opening verse denotes a will or that which is willed. All of humanity created by God possess desires given by Him to fulfill the original design to be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it and have dominion (Genesis 1:28), but the entrance of sin through disobedience perverted the entire purpose of humanities ability to bring glory to God. Our decision making process is directly affected by the desires we have.
Ungodly desires we possess come to light when we take time to pray, study the Word of God, and develop relationships. It is in this time that we choose by the act of the will to bring glory to God or fulfill the desires of the flesh and of the mind. Many of us have made decisions that have caused tremendous anxiety, problems, and accusations because of decisions made contrary to the will of God. Our thoughts and ways are not His thoughts and ways (Isaiah 55:8-9). In recognizing this truth we can submit our desires for examination. Through prayer, the Word, and Godly counsel we acknowledge tendencies in the fallen nature that still desire to connect to the things of this worlds system which leads to death or separation from the will of God. We must realize that we are new creatures and the old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new (I Corinthians 5:17). This is where the act of the will, our desires, determines the decision to become closer to the Father or separate ourselves.
Our decisions should come from a heart desiring the will of our Father. We must endeavor to take upon the mind of Christ so our desires will align itself with the will of God. Delight thyself also in the Lord: and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart (Psalm 37:4). This scripture has throughout ages been misinterpreted because of our selfish desires trying to get what we want. The Holy Spirit has been given to align our petitions so our desires will become His desires. Only then will decisions made in our lives bring advancement of his Kingdom. The times in which we are now living warrants the governing of godly desires to impact and lift up a standard against this world’s system of corruption and deceitful desires (lusts) to fulfill the original mandate given to humanity to bring glory to our creator God.
